Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
