Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
New research indicates that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
