The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
