The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
