Space Traveler Reveals Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
