Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was expected for doubts to be raised about his position after another heavy defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in 12 games, representing the club's poorest streak since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I have got plenty of backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory obviously but when you're in a managerial role and underperforming then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my role. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Club Management
Upon being questioned to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive to the team and for me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “During our regular discussions I perceive the trust. However I've not talked to them after this game yet so we'll see.”
Recurring Issues and Player Reaction
The manager lamented recurring weaknesses from his squad in their European defeat, specifically poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't need to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He continued, “It's tough because I play for the side I follow. I’m a fan, and I've watched Liverpool all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a period of this nature with performances like these.”
Jones stated, “However we still have the emblem on our chest. And until it is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“Our aim is to get this team back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
