Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
