The Life Cycle of a Phenomenon is often characterized by distinct phases.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or leaders present an innovative concept that promises a cure for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to storm the compound down in Brisbane. The gunships are circling. Conflict emerges from within. A lone figure, exposed, shivering, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has emerged through the lines and is taken aside in secrecy towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.

Remember the start, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of Bazball without brains.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Movement founders guarantee a fresh beginning, hope for a future, support, salvation together united in belief in the big idea.

How did it feel at first? Just men on a balcony enjoying success. Tattoos. Muscles. Focus. Peak performance vibes. Of course, England’s players will claim Bazball doesn’t actually exist, which is funny as it’s denied, what was that spectacle?

But we know what it is. It’s Harry Brook playing a shot so unconventional it’s beyond belief. It’s the thrill of Ben Stokes in his final form, an expression conveying: pensive Nordic god, rugged appearance, natural look, genuinely raw you almost imagine to look down and find him positioned on the ground stripped to the waist embracing nature.

It’s the batsman often seen speaking publicly, appearing as a joyful figure formally attired, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. Indeed, the vibe, for a significant period, was only good energy.

3. A New Life

Building period. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of mantras. These beliefs are often illogical to prove commitment.

Does anyone else feel? The reaction, the fury, the disappointment post-defeat seems too strong, too much. The batting collapsed during the match, as is typical there. 4. Hate Bonding

Before that happens, there are two things to consider regarding this. In the past, back in those heady early days, of passion and hope, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. There was outrage, which was helpful as it’s known the best way of proving lack of cult status is when its acolytes respond with anger rejecting criticism of the beliefs.

What has happened in the last few days is just as interesting. It seems that hating Bazball has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, critical analysts, images of frustrated supporters abroad disappointed by the short match, similar to people wanting fairness.

On the other hand, we have the wider backdrop of the opponent’s mixed deep-seated frustration towards the unconventional visitors, claiming, your cherished traditions and have fostered and nurtured as part of your identity from the opposition, well, it’s all a bit of a gag ultimately.

This is the core issue. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. Or at least, the team has long been exclusive, a clique, a garden party, an insular community with a long history of opaque and ritualistic cult history defining it. It has long been where influence is guarded. It’s the colonial game of England, the pioneering brand. And guess what, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been enclosed in this system since childhood. Attempting to break free, to create a less brutal environment, they are just repeating their upbringing, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, however with a new team and a mentor promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Run towards the danger. However much you change, you’re always basically in the same place.
