Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
